When many people hear about domestic violence, they picture a woman being terrorized by an abusive and cruel man two or three times her size. For many, this image is ingrained in their consciousness. In reality, however, abuse comes in many shapes and sizes.

An Ohio woman was recently charged with the murder of her boyfriend. The man was found dead inside of their home after being stabbed in the chest during what police believe was a domestic altercation. According to family members, the man called his mom hours before the stabbing. The man's sister said her brother sounded out of breath when he called his mom.

Those close to the couple say domestic violence had been going on between the couple for years. The man's sister described her brother coming to her house beaten up and with black eyes. She said that he had come over with cuts before, and once even shaved his head because he had been dragged by his hair. The woman's family has described the stabbing as an accident.

Domestic violence is a serious matter that should never be ignored. Sometimes it is difficult for victims of domestic violence to ask for help for fear of losing their children, hurting the ones they love, or financial insecurity, among other things. Male victims of domestic violence often struggle with acute feelings of shame and humiliation, making it even more difficult to ask for help.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, an attorney specializing in family law matters can help alleviate your concerns and find the light at the end of the tunnel. A skilled attorney can help you obtain legal custody of your children, protect your financial future, secure a restraining order and take other protective measures.
