It is not uncommon to face complicated issues in a divorce. Often, common divorce-related issues that spark conflict in Ohio and raise tensions among couples going through a divorce are financial. This is especially true when one spouse is the primary family breadwinner.

In previous generations, men were more often the breadwinners of the family, and therefore it was men that were expected to support the family unit after the family separated. A recent survey, however, shows that these trends are changing just as society is changing all around us.

Wealth does not necessarily mean that everything in life is going to be easy. This is especially true when it comes to matters of the heart. Whether you are an everyday working class couple from Canton, Ohio, or a famous two-sport athlete from Dallas, Texas, divorce can be emotionally taxing, physically exhausting and financially draining.

This is evident in the divorce proceedings taking place between NFL football star Deion Sanders and his estranged wife, Pilar Sanders. The couple's domestic difficulties have received a lot of media attention lately and the problems between the sparring spouses only seem to be getting worse and worse by the day.

A national survey conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum suggests that law enforcement agencies from across the nation, including Ohio, are encountering more domestic violence because of the faltering economy. The survey is part of an ongoing inquiry by the Police Executive Research Forum into the effects of economic conditions on law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

According to the survey, more than half of the law enforcement agencies that responded to the survey reported that the poor economy might be a factor contributing to a rise in domestic violence and overall domestic conflict. This equates to a 40 percent increase in law enforcement agencies reporting such a correlation between the failing economy and rising rates of spousal abuse since a similar survey was conducted in 2010.

In Ohio and elsewhere, child custody can be one of the toughest issues for couples facing divorce or separation to address. Making an already complicated matter worse are the unforeseeable events that often get in the way, like a new job in a new city.

While this is a big event for divorced couples, often resulting in court intervention, technology is making it easier for parents to remain in contact with their children even when great distances get in the way.

Study says cohabiting for unmarried couples not linked to divorce

In Ohio, unmarried couples often face challenges that would not distinguish them from married or recently divorced spouses. These issues can include child custody battles, shared parenting or child support. However, these couples may be interested to note that a certain lifestyle--living together before marriage--does not appear to have an effect on a couple's likelihood to divorce.

A new study on marriage calls into questions the traditional notion that couples that cohabitate before marriage are likely to have less successful marriages than those that do not. According to the co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, one reason living together prior to marriage appears to be less significant is that more and more people are doing it.

Renewal of domestic violence act could affect Ohio residents

The Violence Against Women Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate in 1994 and quickly became a well-known and important tool in our nation's battle against domestic violence. The Act provides money to Ohio, and every other state in the nation, to fund local law enforcement agencies to provide services to victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The Violence Against Women Act is once again receiving attention as the legislation is up for reauthorization. Ohio supporters highlight the many benefits the legislation has provided to the victims of domestic abuse in the state of Ohio, and the work and educational initiatives the legislation has funded in an effort to eradicate violence in the home.

Ohio court grants gay couple divorce

A Columbus, Ohio, judge recently granted a divorce to a same-sex couple that married in New York last year. The two men married in September 2011. Shortly after marrying one another, the couple decided to seek a divorce. In a strange turn of events, an Ohio judge honored the men's request despite the fact that Ohio does not recognize gay marriage.

In recent years a number of states have decided to allow gay marriage. In 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made same-sex marriage legal throughout New York. In Ohio, however, not only are same-sex marriages and civil unions not legal, but in 2004 the state passed an amendment that officially banned same-sex marriage and civil unions.

Bill could protect Ohio military members facing custody disputes

Solid child custody arrangements can be difficult to develop and sustain. When a member of the family has to leave for an extended period of time, these arrangements only become more difficult and tenuous.

A new federal bill introduced by House Representative Michael Turner of Ohio would protect the child custody rights of military service members. As it stands, courts may use military deployments against service members when determining the best interests of the child. This bill would prohibit family court judges and magistrates from considering military deployments and service when considering the best interests of the child. Additionally, the bill provides for custody arrangements to return to pre-deployment status upon the return of the service member.

A Franklin County magistrate recently ruled that an Ohio mother is required to share custody of her 8-year-old daughter with her former partner. The mother has fought the efforts of her former girlfriend to share custody of the 8-year-old girl for several years. The woman, who is the biological mother of the child, told reporters she intends to appeal the ruling and seek sole custody of the girl.

The woman conceived the girl via artificial insemination while she was in a committed relationship with the now former girlfriend. The couple lived together at the time of the child's birth in 2003. Both women refer to the young girl as their daughter and feel that they are entitled to parental rights.

Ohio's aging population more likely to divorce than in the past

According to a study by sociologists from Bowling Green State University, divorce rates for couples over 50 have doubled over the last two decades. The reasons behind the increase in "empty nester" divorces are difficult to pinpoint, as contributing factors vary in each case.

One potential reason for the spike in divorce among baby boomers is, with children grown up and obligations fulfilled, couples are more willing to acknowledge their differences and go their separate ways. Divorcing later in life, however, is still emotionally draining.
